MRAC is proud to present the November 2018 exhibition: “Portraits” - The Art of Mateus Costa.
The MRAC CoOp Portraits project began as a proposal by one member, Mateus Costa, to help raise funds for the art center. Mateus accepted the challenge of completing portraits of each CoOp member and donating the proceeds of the work sold back to MRAC.
The show will feature the portraits completed by master artist Mateus, along with works by Harald Grote and Ron Howard who have joined with Mateus in creating portraits of CoOp members.
ARTIST STATEMENT
When I first thought of the Portraits project, it was during a time when, at our monthly meetings, the center was concerned and preparing for fund raising activities.
Since I am not truly a good solicitor for funds, I thought it would be a great idea to contribute my passion for the figure and create a Portraits project, using the members of MRAC as subjects. I am contributing to our center's fund raising activities by donating the proceeds of all sales from the Portraits project to MRAC.
Because I like to work from a live model whenever possible, my only requirement I had was that each member being drawn "sit" for at least a 3 hour time span so I am able to complete in-person as much as possible.
Photos were taken during the modeling sessions, which I later used at home for correction or completion. My work at home was purely an attempt to finish the feeling and mood that I believe was coming through while doing the live session.
What I did not project was the growth in friendship and professional respect that came from each member's portrait session. Often, my fellow members attended the portrait sessions to draw with me. Each experience was different and particular to the moment.
In all, this Portraits project, regardless how it will end up in funds for the center, has drawn me close to my colleagues and created many memories that I will cherish for a lifetime.
Although not all members were done, I look forward to continue to do these portraits and I am excited and looking forward to drawing the poets and writers of our organization.
